Our mission statement

The shop was created for two reasons: to serve the drumming needs of area musicians with a personal, attentive, and unmatched level of service AND to build a new crop of passionate and creative drummers through our lesson and clinic program.

Our Story

Marissa and I had a busy year in 2012. We graduated college in May, got married in July, moved from Maine to Massachusetts in September, and held the Grand Opening of The Drum Shop North Shore in November. Since then, we've been plugging along to create our vision of the ideal local drum shop. DSNS is meant to be more than a place to get drum sticks and heads - it's a meeting place for area musicians - a place to get inspired and make new friends.

There's a stigma that local shops are more expensive and offer less selection than the big box stores, but that's not the case at DSNS. We have a superior selection at the best prices around. We work hard to exceed your expectations and stay within your budget. Please come down and see what we're all about.

~ Nate Morrison

The Staff

Nate & Marissa Morrison (Owners)

Nate works full time in the shop doing his best to deliver the goods. His strong suits are product knowledge, drum tuning, and finding you the perfect cymbal.

Marissa balances a full-time job as a social worker in a group home for autistic adults with her time in the shop. She is master organizer, drum head finder, and motivator. This shop would fall apart without her!

Kenzie & Rambo (entertaining children and adults alike)

Kenzie came into our lives shortly after we opened the shop. Rambo joined us three years later. They help fill the void until we have our own children. Kenzie maintains a busy schedule barking at any dog in her sights while Rambo runs full blast toward any incoming customers. Stop by and see them anytime!

building our drum community

It is my goal to help bring drummers together under one roof whenever possible. That's why we put together "The Drum Hang" on the first Wednesday of each month. Typically, each event features a guest clinician, pizza and drinks, and often times free giveaways. Since our first "Drum Hang" in August of 2013, we've hosted Bob Gullotti, Dave Mattacks, James Murphy, Mark Walker, Colin Rosso, Tony "Thunder" Smith, Jerome Deupree, Jon Hazilla, Rich Redmond, Dave DiCenso, Skip Hadden, Daniel Glass, John DeChristopher, Steve Langone, and Danny Seraphine as clinicians. Please keep your eye on our "Upcoming Events" below to stay up-to-date. We look forward to seeing you here! ~ Nate

Drum Lessons

Our View:

Private lessons are vitally important to the development of any well-rounded musician. A good teacher is able to identify areas of weakness and lay out a plan for improvement. Our shortcomings often go unnoticed for years without the keen eye of a musical mentor. We hand select our teachers from a huge pool of talented musicians to offer the best educational environment for our students. We are committed to excellence in education and want to help you achieve your musical goals.

Structure and Rates:

There are no signup fees and no long-term contracts! Lessons are scheduled month-to-month. Each lesson is a half-hour long and occurs weekly. The tuition rate is $110 per month or $30 per individual lesson. We also offer one-hour lessons for $210 per month. We recommended that students attend weekly to help build structure and improve accountability – and to take advantage of the tuition discount. If you need to miss a lesson for any reason, we can usually schedule an hour long lesson before or after your absence. Our teachers strive to remain pliable as our lives are often chaotic and unpredictable – just give us a heads up! Please call us anytime at 978-810-9377 – the first lesson is always free!

The Teacher: Like many lifetime drummers, Nate started out on the pots and pans — thankfully, his folks caught on early and bought him a drum set as a toddler. His earliest influence was Kenny Aronoff since his father was a big fan of John Mellencamp. He began mimicking the records he heard throughout his childhood. To supplement, Nate started formal lessons in the fourth grade with Carl Menard. In high school, he studied with former Alan Dawson student, Phil Verrill. Phil gave him the tools needed to grow his musicianship. By the time Nate graduated, he was the All-State Jazz Drummer, Berklee Jazz Festival winner in both jazz combo and big band, State Rhythm Award recipient, and Berklee College of Music scholarship recipient. Nate decided to stay local and attend the University of Southern Maine. While there, he took one-off lessons from Derico Watson, Jim Riley, and Norm Bergeron while gigging and teaching all over New England. The two bands that gigged the most were the Tony Boffa Band, a nine-piece horn band, and the Midweek Jazz Quartet comprised of the same musicians Nate knew and played with since the sixth grade. After graduation, Nate married the girl of his dreams and moved to Massachusetts to open The Drum Shop North Shore. The shop was created to help build an environment where drummers could hang out, get inspired, and have access to the best gear at the best prices around. Nate has been studying with Bob Gullotti for past three years while gigging regularly as a sideman for many popular Boston bands. Nowadays, Nate balances his passion for playing and selling drums with teaching students of all ages and skill levels. Get in touch to schedule a complimentary trial lesson!

"Nate and Marissa are running a super business in the North Shore! In addition to having a great selection of new and vintage gear, quality service, a repair shop, a positive and knowledgeable sales staff, great teachers and a commitment to promoting educational events.. (Wow)...these folks are just great PEOPLE that LOVE drums! This is the kind of drum shop that you will be spending time in. Stop by and say hello!" ~ Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean, Bryan Adams, Trace Adkins, Jim Brickram, Deana Carter, Jewel, Miranda Lambert, Pam Tillis, Hank Williams III, The Pointer Sisters)

"the positive, helpful attitude & ever increasing stock in this north shore store make it an essential visit for all new england players - keep up the good work, nate ! ~ Dave Mattacks (Paul McCartney, Elton John, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Jimmy Page, XTC, Cat Stevens, Mary Chapin Carpenter)

"As drummers, we're all members of a special club. And it's the best club! We love to hang out at drum clinics, talk drums and soak in all that's cool and exciting about playing drums. The Drum Shop North Shore is not only a great place to do all those things, but it promotes and invests in drumming. It reminds me of the feeling I had as a kid walking into a drum shop with my dad. All you drummers know what I'm talking about! I've been a drummer for over 40 years and worked in the Drum Industry for over 30 years, and have learned a lot about drums from Nate. Nate and Marissa understand the importance of "community" and DSNS is a shining example of the drum community being alive and well. I'm not only a huge fan of The Drum Shop North Shore; I'm a customer. Thanks for having me for "The Drum Hang!" ~ John DeChristopher (Aritst Representation/Consultant. Previously Zildjian, Drum Workshop, Simmons Drums)

"The Drum Shop North Shore has everything from maintenance items for your gear to special snare drums that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Whether you are a cat just starting out and need some advice on what drum head works with what drum or a pro on your way to a gig, The Drum Shop North Shore has your back! The owner Nate is not just some dude selling drums... he's a drummer!!" ~ James Murphy (Blue Man Group, 3Vibe, www.peaceandrums.com)

"The Drum Shop North Shore - A Real Drum Shop! I'd drive to get there! This quality shop is like the shop that you used to go to when you started playing drums! A shop where, if you had an idea, they would help you realize it!" ~ Tony "Thunder" Smith (Lou Reed, Santana, John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck)

"DSNS is a great place for all of your drumming needs. From new to vintage Nate has it all, or can get it real quick. It's really a positive place for the drummers out there who respect and appreciate a small guy doing it correctly. Bravo to the DSNS!!!!!!!!" ~ Bob Gullotti (The Fringe, Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, J.J. Johnson, John Patitucci)

"When I presented my clinic at The Drum Shop North Shore, I was reminded of how important a REAL drum shop is to the drumming community. Not only did they have a jaw-dropping amount of reasonably priced gear, but they also had the wisdom and know-how to point drummers (of all backgrounds) in the right direction. I also met some amazing people at the store, which was very inspiring. We're all in this together, and The Drum Shop North Shore is the drummers' Mecca." ~ Mark Walker (5-time Grammy Winner, Paquito D'Rivera, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Sammy Davis, Jr.)

"The Drum Shop North Shore is unique, and Nate Morrison is very special.. a perfect marriage for all of us in the drumming community to celebrate! "The Drum Hang," appropriately titled, on the first Wednesday of every month is old school spirit with fresh, next generation faces.. the lineage continues...If you think The Drum Shop North Shore is out of your way, think again...it's the only thing that should be "ON YOUR WAY" ! ~ Jon Hazilla (Professor at Berklee College of Music, Author of Mastering the Art of Brushes, Recipient of National Endowment for the Arts Award)

"Thanks so much for the opportunity to do a presentation at DSNS. It was a real pleasure to be a part of such a warm, caring and knowledgeable group. They reflect what they experience in your first class shop. I can easily see how you have been able to become a strong force with the drummers of the North Shore area. It is success well deserved and I wish you, Marissa, Colin, Jon and Kenzie continued success." ~ Skip Hadden (Professor at Berklee College of Music, Recordings with Weather Report, Author of Profiles in Jazz Drumming, World Fusion Drumming, Broken Eighth Note Feel, and The Beat, The Body, and The Brain)
